A couple of weeks ago I shared a few strategies to help you manage your energy.
The one that I use most often with groups is the Fountains & Drains exercise. It’s a great way to get an overview of what gives you energy and what drains you of energy.
Over and over again I see that time has a direct influence on whether people can focus on their fountains or their drains. There are so many things that come back to this idea of time:
- Getting enough hours of sleep.
- Fitting in a break to eat something healthy.
- Taking time to go to the gym.
- Having the time to take vacations.
- Finding time to do hobbies.
Simply put: feeling like we don’t have enough time to tend to our own needs is one of the main reasons why we feel stressed.
We live in a world that is run by time. We work too many hours and often feel like we don’t have enough energy to do what we love. So, what can we do about this?
Instead of worrying about how to get your energy to fill a block of predetermined hours, imagine organizing your tasks according to your level of energy instead.
If we use our energy’s peaks and lows, we can focus on assigning our most important work to those times when it peaks, allowing us to be more productive during those times. When we are more productive, this frees up time to rest and re-energize in our favourite ways (our fountains).
Here is a short 7-minute meditation you can use at any time of the day to help you manage your energy.
